Acceleration Consortium Summer Undergraduate Research Program in Accelerated Discovery (AC-SURP) – call for Applications

The Acceleration Consortium (AC) is pleased to announce its Summer Undergraduate Research Program in Accelerated Discovery (AC-SURP).

Value: $8,500 stipend to support the student’s research project in one of the AC’s self-driving labs.

Purpose: Funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF), Acceleration Consortium (AC)-SURP provides experiential training in topics related to accelerated materials and molecules discovery. Over this 12-week fellowship, students will undertake a project performing state-of-the-art research with an AC principal investigator. 

Eligibility Requirements: 

  1. An undergraduate student registered in a full-time course load at a Canadian university or an individual who has recently graduated from a Canadian university but has not entered into a graduate program
  2. Self-identifies in an equity-deserving group that is typically underrepresented in the scientific disciplines of computer science, robotics, material science, or other areas relevant to accelerated discovery 
    • Equity deserving groups are defined as: Black and racialized persons; women; persons with disabilities; Indigenous Peoples; and members of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities
  3. Student is interested in conducting scientific research aligned with the topics addressed by the Acceleration Consortium
  4. Students enrolled in professional programs or who are currently enrolled in graduate studies are not eligible

Evaluation Criteria 

  • Strength of letter of reference
  • GPA – candidates with a GPA of 3 or higher preferred, but those with lower GPAs will be considered
  • Quality of their personal statement of interest and research statement 
    • Applicants will be matched with AC faculty and mentors who have extensive research backgrounds for the applicant’s area of interest.

The Branch Out Neurological Foundation is a registered charity that provides grant funding for students and researchers at partnering universities in Canada who are leading the way for innovation by exploring non-pharmaceutical treatments and alternative technologies (neuroCAM*) for neurological disorders.

About the grant

The undergraduate grant is a summer research opportunity for neuroCAM* studies at partnering universities. (Learn more about neuroCAM here). Students selected for funding will be awarded a $7,000 salary for the May-August period.

Mitacs Accelerate Undergraduate Student Internships

The Mitacs Accelerate program can help fund your research and trainee costs!   The Mitacs Accelerate program helps fund partnered research projects by supporting undergraduate students  through "units" consisting of 4-month paid graduate student internships.   Each Mitacs Accelerate grant is a $15,000 award, with at least $10,000 to support the student stipend and the balance available for project resources.  In addition to single awards, the program can support “clusters” of units that can span multiple years and dozens (or more) of pre-approved internship opportunities.  No deadlines - apply at any time.

Mitacs is a national funding agency and their programs can help you connect with industry, not-for-profit, community and other external partners.

Mitacs Globalink Research Award – Call for Applications

Mitacs Globalink Research Award – Call for Applications. Up to 200 senior undergraduate and graduate student, as well as postdoctoral fellows from the university can participate in research exchanges through the Globalinks Research Award pathway. Faculty at U of T and an international university from a partner country will jointly supervise research projects. In addition, up to 80 students and postdoctoral fellows from international universities will come to Canada to conduct research at U of T. The funding for this international research mobility will allow students and researchers to build on their professional and academic networks, to refine their research skills in new environments and gain global fluency.
Award amount: $6,000 Canadian for 12-24 week long research projects*
Application deadline: 3 months prior to student arriving at host university

Mitacs - Business Strategy Internships (BSI)

In partnership with Canadian academic institutions, Mitacs is pleased to offer the Business Strategy Internship (BSI). The award provides either $10,000 or $15,000 per intern (undergraduate to postdoctoral fellow) to undertake a four-month internship project with a partner organization in Canada. Interns and their academic supervisor will co-design a project with the partner organization to work on the organization’s innovation activities, helping them improve their products, processes, or services. Throughout the internship, Mitacs provides online professional development courses to interns through our e-Campus, EDGE.

The BSI program aims to:

  • support innovation to generate knowledge and its transfer between academic and non-academic sectors
  • strengthen the innovation capabilities of partner organizations
  • support the creation and ownership of intellectual property in Canada
  • promote collaboration between sectors by reducing the risk for companies to engage in innovation
  • provide work-integrated learning and professional skills training to increase the employability of post-secondary students
  • ensure and promote equitable access by underrepresented groups to foster inclusive innovation 

Innovation projects are expected to lead to change and improvements for the partner and/or community, through exploration, design, and implementation of improvements/efficiencies in business models, products, processes, or service delivery.

Undergraduate Summer Research Program

Participants in the Undergraduate Summer Research Program (USRP) spend the summer conducting research under the supervision of a Pharmaceutical Sciences faculty member. Participants will attend an orientation session, laboratory safety training sessions and seminar presentations by faculty members. In mid-August, students will have the opportunity to present their research projects, in the annual Poster Day, to their peers and the rest of the Faculty. Presenters will be judged, and the winner will receive the Summer Undergraduate Student Research Program Award.

Undergraduate students are offered a unique opportunity to participate in research in the following areas:

Eligibility

  • Students must be registered in a bachelor’s degree program at a Canadian University or Institution or enrolled at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy in either the PharmD, PharmD for Pharmacists or Pharmaceutical Chemistry program;
  • Students must have completed at least one year (4.0 credits) in a full-time bachelor's degree program prior to the application deadline, January 18, 2026;
  • Students who complete their bachelor's degree program in the spring of 2026 are eligible for the 2026 USRP program; students who have completed their bachelor's degree earlier than 2026 are not eligible to apply;
  • Students must be supervised by a Pharmaceutical Sciences graduate faculty member;
  • Students must have a cumulative GPA of 75% or higher to be eligible (equivalent in the U of T grading system is ‘3.0’ or higher);
  • The program is open to students from any bachelor's degree program at the University of Toronto and from other Canadian Universities.
  • Students who have been accepted into the Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Program beginning September 2026 are eligible to participate in the 2026 USRP program;
  • You may hold only one award (USRP, USRA, etc.) per fiscal year

Duration

Individual projects will run from 12 to 16 weeks as arranged between participants and supervisors from May 4 to August 21, 2026

Funding

  • Students are paid $4,350 – $5,800 for the summer (depending on eligibility for external awards and the length of the project);
  • Students who apply for the undergraduate summer research program will automatically be considered for other awards (e.g. NSERC USRA, UTEA, etc.).

Students are required to apply through the CNLx portal (website) and complete a Questionnaire, then apply for individual opportunities (limit of 5);
