The Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto, invites applications for the position of Sessional Clinical Lecturer to teach in the required courses, PHM241: Microbiology of Infectious Diseases and a new course in Year 1, PHM100Y1: Foundations of Pharmacy Practice which is offered in the fall term of the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program. The anticipated dates for this sessional position will run from June 2, 2025 to January 2026.
This course is designed for pharmacy students to develop a broad understanding of clinical microbiology as it relates to human infectious diseases. The students will become familiar with basic bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology. The most common microorganisms responsible for human infections, from each category, will be presented in depth providing students with an understanding of natural habitat, pathogenesis of infection and laboratory diagnostics. This will be presented in a case-based format to enable students to link this knowledge with management of infection in subsequent courses. This course will provide an opportunity for students to become familiar with the processes of the clinical microbiology laboratory in order to better understand how organisms are identified in clinical practice to allow students to apply this information in subsequent infectious diseases management courses.
The second year required PHM241 course is 26 hours and primarily delivered via asynchronous recorded lectures. There is opportunity for development of innovative online teaching methods in enhance student learning. The new Foundations course will be delivered to first year students in a new curriculum and will be sequenced with other foundational basic science material with the current total contact hours estimated at 8-10 hours of asynchronous lectures. The expected enrollment for the course is 265.
Applicants should be certified as a clinical microbiologist by the Canadian College for Microbiology (CCM), or be enrolled in an accredited medical microbiology residency training program. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellence in teaching, currently practice in, and demonstrate a strong knowledge of the relevant topics, and possess excellent organization and communication skills. Experience in the development and delivery of courses, and large classroom teaching or course co-ordination is a strong asset.
