The Role of the Pharmacist in Opioid Stewardship and Chronic Pain

Presenter

Dr. Laura Murphy is a Pharmacy Clinical Leader and Clinical Investigator at the University Health Network, an Associate Professor at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, and co-chair of the Interprofessional Pain Curriculum, UTCSP.  She is a member of the Expert Advisory Panel for the Canadian Pain Task Force and the National Faculty on the use of Opioids for Chronic Noncancer Pain. Laura’s clinical practice is within an interprofessional chronic pain team at Toronto Rehab, and her research areas of interest include opioids, cannabis and roles for pharmacists to support people living with chronic pain.

 

Discussant

Professor Michael Beazely is a faculty member at the School of Pharmacy, University of Waterloo. His basic lab research focuses on understanding how growth factor receptors and G protein-coupled receptors modulate ion channels and neuronal cell function. Prof. Beazely’s clinical research includes the evaluation of undergraduate pharmacy education with respect to substance use and educational tool development for practicing health professionals.
