Internationally recognized leader in pharmacoepidemiology, health services research and AI in healthcare Muhammad Mamdani has been appointed a joint tenure position as Professor within the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy and Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. The appointment follows an international search for a Professor in the Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Healthcare.
Professor Mamdani brings extensive expertise at the intersection of data science, medicine and pharmacy. His appointment further strengthens collaborative research, innovation and education across LMP, the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy and the broader University of Toronto health sciences community.
As Professor within LMP and the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, Professor Mamdani will continue to contribute to research, education and leadership in artificial intelligence and healthcare analytics, while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across medicine, pharmacy and the health sciences. His work will support the advancement of AI-driven approaches within the health system, pharmaceutical sciences and medical and pharmacy practice.
LMP is the home of the Temerty Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research and Education in Medicine (T-CAIREM), a collaborative initiative advancing artificial intelligence research, education and implementation across the University of Toronto and Toronto Academic Health Sciences Network. Professor Mamdani is the founding Director and under his leadership, T-CAIREM has developed a broad range of education and research initiatives, including speaker series, student training opportunities and continuing professional education programs focused on AI in health and medicine. It has also become the largest AI in medicine network in Canada.
At the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, Professor Mamdani holds a graduate appointment in the department of pharmaceutical sciences and is an executive committee member of the Toronto Centre for Real World Evidence (T-RWE). Opening in 2026, T-RWE focuses on advancing real world evidence methodologies, including use of AI, setting standards for open and responsible data use, and training the next generation of RWE researchers and policy leaders.

Professor Mamdani obtained his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Michigan and subsequently completed a Fellowship in Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research at Detroit Medical Center and Wayne State University. He also earned an MA in Economics from Wayne State University and an MPH from Harvard University. He currently serves as Clinical Lead for AI at Ontario Health, where he develops and implements strategies to promote widespread AI adoption across Ontario's health care system
Over the course of his career, Professor Mamdani has authored more than 600 peer-reviewed publications, including articles in The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet and BMJ, and has secured more than $50 million in research funding. His research focuses on pharmacoepidemiology, health policy, health economics and the implementation of artificial intelligence in healthcare and pharmaceutical sciences. He has also contributed extensively to education and mentorship at the University of Toronto and received the James Waddell Mentorship Award from St. Michael’s Hospital in 2017.
