Collaborative Program in Biomedical Engineering

The University of Toronto has a long history in the application of engineering to the medical and biological field. That history started in the 1950's with pacemaker and hypothermia research and continued through to the establishment of the Institute some 35 years ago. The Collaborative Program provides a flexible way for outstanding students to cross traditional departmental boundaries. The establishment of this program recognizes collaboration that already exists, while facilitating the continuing development of this rapidly changing interdisciplinary field. Candidates must register in the School of Graduate Studies through the collaborating departments (home department), and must meet all respective degree requirements as described by the School of Graduate Studies and the Program.

 

Applicants wishing to pursue a Master of Applied Science (MASc), or the Master of Science (MSc) degree in the Collaborative Program at the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering must be a graduate of a four-year bachelor's degree in dentistry, engineering, engineering science, medicine, or one of the physical or biological sciences. Candidates must meet the admission requirements of both the collaborating graduate units and the Institute. The program of study for each of the Master's degree program will comprise of at least four-half courses. Engineering and physical science students are required to take a biological science course, JPB1022H Human Physiology as Related to Bioengineering (or an equivalent); while biological science students will be expected to take a physical science course, JPB1055H Bioengineering for Life Scientists (or an equivalent approved by the Graduate Coordinator). Students will also be expected to successfully complete a research thesis relevant to Biomedical Engineering that must be summarized in an oral presentation to the Department.

 

Each Master's student in the Collaborative Program normally requires to have a supervisory committee consisting of a supervisor from IBBME, with a cross appointment in the home department, and other members from other collaborating departments as required.

 

Applicants requesting direct admissions into the Doctoral of Philosophy (PhD) degree must hold a Master's degree in dentistry, engineering, engineering science, medicine, or one of the physical or biological sciences from the University of Toronto. All other admissions will be into the Master's program with the possibility of a transfer into the PhD program within 14-18 months from the date of first registration. Such transfer must be approved by both the Institute and the collaborating departments. However, direct admission to the PhD program may be granted under exceptional circumstances where the applicants have demonstrated excellent knowledge and advance research ability. The PhD program of study will comprise of at least four-half courses and a research thesis selected in consultation with the home department. As the thesis is the major component of the degree requirements, each student must pass a qualifying  examination during the first year of study as a candidate in the PhD degree. The PhD thesis is reviewed and examined by both the Program committee and the School of Graduate Studies.
